Finance Minister To Present FY 2026 Budget In Parliament

The Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura will present the Fiscal Year 2026 Government Budget and Statement of Economic and Financial Policies to Parliament on Friday, 28th November 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place in the Chamber of Parliament, with guests advised to be seated by 9:30 a.m.

The notice invites cabinet ministers, deputies, heads of departments, state owned enterprises, development partners, diplomatic and consular officials, civil society organisations, district budget oversight committees, and the general public to attend.

This year’s budget presentation comes at a time when Sierra Leone continues to navigate global and domestic economic pressures. Government officials have highlighted the need for stronger revenue mobilisation, improved debt management, and tighter public spending. Recent budget discussions have also focused on the push for more sustainable revenue sources as external financing declines. The finance ministry has signalled that the FY 2026 budget will prioritise fiscal discipline, efficiency, and reforms aimed at boosting growth and protecting the most vulnerable segments of society.

Sierra Leone’s annual budget has long served as the main instrument for outlining government priorities, but the country has seen several mid-year adjustments in recent years. In July 2025, Parliament approved a supplementary budget after changes in inflation and exchange-rate projections affected earlier assumptions. Such updates have become more common as the government responds to shifting economic conditions, highlighting the importance of flexibility while maintaining long term development commitments.

Parliament plays a central role in the budget process, reviewing, debating, and approving the financial plan before it becomes law. The Parliamentary Budget Office, established to support lawmakers with technical and economic analysis, helps MPs evaluate expenditure proposals and revenue forecasts. Parliament also reviews supplementary budgets when needed, ensuring proper oversight and accountability in how public funds are allocated and spent. Through this process, lawmakers help shape national priorities and maintain a check on the executive’s fiscal decisions.
