Pharmacy Board Warns Against Counterfeit Diclofenac Tablets in Circulation
The Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone has issued a public alert warning citizens against the consumption of counterfeit Diclofenac Tablets currently in circulation. In a press statement dated 17th September 2025, the Board disclosed that the product was illegally imported into the country by Leigh Pharmaceuticals of No. 10 Regent Road without the required import permit. As a result, the Board cannot guarantee the drug’s efficacy or safety.
According to the release, the tablets in question are counterfeit versions of the registered pharmaceutical product Paludic, which is lawfully authorized by the Board under Abanita Pharmaceuticals. The Board has therefore directed that the counterfeit tablets should not be consumed, and urged the public to report any information relating to the sale, distribution, or storage of the product through official channels for further regulatory action.
Counterfeit drugs pose a significant threat to public health globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) warning that they can cause treatment failure, prolonged illness, drug resistance, or even death. In many cases, such products contain incorrect doses, harmful substances, or no active ingredients at all, undermining trust in the healthcare system and endangering lives. Sierra Leone, like many other developing countries, faces challenges in regulating the circulation of fake medicines, making public vigilance and regulatory oversight critical.
The Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone plays a key role in safeguarding public health by regulating pharmaceutical products, issuing permits, and ensuring that only safe and effective medicines reach consumers. In recent years, the Board has strengthened its monitoring mechanisms and worked with law enforcement agencies to combat the influx of counterfeit drugs, while also engaging in public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of unregulated medicines.
The Board assured the public of its continued efforts to protect and safeguard health at all times and encouraged anyone seeking further clarification to contact them directly through the provided communication channels.
