President Bio, Captain Traoré Forge Stronger Partnership for Peace and Security in West Africa

President Julius Maada Bio in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has held a bilateral meeting with Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Both leaders pledged to work together in promoting peace, unity, and stability in the West African region.

President Bio expressed gratitude for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation by Captain Traoré. He emphasized that his visit was not only a gesture of solidarity with the Burkinabé people but also an opportunity to better understand the political transitions facing some countries in the region. Drawing from Sierra Leone’s own transition from military rule to democracy, he highlighted the importance of such experiences in strengthening regional stability.

On the issue of security, President Bio raised concerns about worsening insecurity in the Sahel, driven by terrorism and violent extremism. He called for a stronger security cooperation framework between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to jointly confront the growing threat. Both Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso also reaffirmed commitments to boost trade and mutual investments, leveraging their unique strengths to expand economic ties.

President Bio assumed the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority in July 2024, succeeding Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His appointment came at a pivotal time for the regional body, which has been facing deep challenges ranging from unconstitutional changes of government to violent extremist threats in parts of the Sahel. As Chairman, Bio pledged to prioritize peacebuilding and reconciliation, stressing that the region must remain united to preserve stability and economic growth.

Since taking office as ECOWAS Chair, President Bio has steered several high-level engagements aimed at bridging divides within the bloc. He has sought to maintain dialogue with member states under military leadership, while also encouraging pathways back to democratic governance. His approach has been described as pragmatic, blending firmness on constitutional order with an openness to dialogue, a balance that many observers believe is crucial in addressing the current fractures within West Africa.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who hosted the Sierra Leonean leader in Ouagadougou, has emerged as a central figure in the Sahel’s shifting political landscape. Traoré seized power in September 2022, ousting Burkina Faso’s interim leader Paul-Henri Damiba in a second military takeover within the same year. At just 34 years old, he became the youngest head of state in the world, positioning himself as a defender of national sovereignty and a key member of the AES alliance, alongside Mali and Niger. His government has placed emphasis on regional solidarity, security cooperation, and diversifying international partnerships in the fight against terrorism.

The meeting between President Bio and Captain Traoré signals an important step in narrowing divides between ECOWAS and the AES bloc, which had been at odds over the suspension of military-led states. By focusing on shared goals of peace and regional development, both leaders underscored the need for constructive engagement to address common challenges. Their pledge to deepen cooperation could lay the foundation for more inclusive dialogue across West Africa.
